"Wedding Belles" to Benefit Scholarships

Published on: September 9, 2014

If you enjoyed WBCT’s past productions of "Hallelujah Girls" and "Steel Magnolias", you don’t want to miss their next play, "Wedding Belles" by Alan Bailey and Ronnie Claire Edwards. The comedy, co-written by one of the playwrights responsible for "Smoke on the Mountain", has all of the laughter and none of the tears of those previous shows. It’s a perfect feel-good comedy which benefits a great cause—fine arts scholarships for elementary, middle school, and high school students.
Set in Texas during WWII, "Belles" is the story of four women, members of a small-town garden club, who decide to give a young orphan girl a wedding before her “beloved Jesse” goes off to war. Each character has obstacles to overcome –not the least of which is a missing groom. After much laughter and a few challenges, the women discover hidden depths in their characters, and the audience can be certain of a happy ending.
The proceeds of "Wedding Belles" will be used to support WBCT’s Summer Drama Camps and to provide several scholarships. The community theatre gives scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to continue their studies in the arts and to elementary and middle school students who cannot afford the fees for WBCT’s summer drama camps. Part of the proceeds from Belles will go to the Dr. John G. Hasty, Jr. Memorial Band Scholarship at Russell Middle School. That scholarship, given in memory of RMS’s first band director, provides the tuition to send RMS band students to Encore Music Camp.
The play will open at the Colleen O. Williams Theater in the Winder Cultural Arts Center on Friday, September 26, 2014 and continue for two weekends with a final performance on Sunday, October 5. Friday and Saturday show times are 7:30 while the two Sunday matinees will begin at 3:00. Come and join the laughter while you support some talented young people who want to continue their studies in the fine arts.
